Hot Dog Heaven’s Pride and Joy: The Chicago Dog
There’s a small town hot dog place in Woodstock that can stand its ground against any of the finest street food you’ll find in Chicago. In fact, Becky ( or Miss Becky, as the children call her) and Barney Wentzel ship their dogs in from Chi-town, but unlike their northern counterparts, serve them up with all the amenities you won’t get elsewhere: the slam of a screen door behind you, hugs for the kids, and the southern twang of a “What’ll ya’ll have today?” Besides dogs, they also serve up specialties like their Italian Beef sandwich topped with giardiniera, burgers, brats, and some of the best onion rings around.

Always particularly lively around midday, Hot Dog Heaven offers family-style booths and tables indoors as well as picnic tables in their adjacent courtyard. On pretty days, you might even want to get your order packed up to go, cross the railroad tracks across the street, and enjoy your meal on a park bench beside the fountain in the Woodstock City Park. Miss Becky has done well to accommodate for these family-friendly outings, including a complimentary frisbee with each kid’s meal. And if you’re dining alone, just grab your lunch at Hot Dog Heaven and take advantage of the free wi-fi the city has just been added to our downtown park.
