It’s official, Woodstock has received the Main Street Designation. They are the only city in Cherokee County to achieve this designation. Although Canton is in the process of becoming a Main Street city. On June 15, 2010, it was recommended to Commissioner Mike Beatty that the City of Woodstock be named an official Georgia Main Street Community with the Woodstock Downtown Development Authority serving as its coordinating program. Woodstock was awarded the designation on June 17th, 2010. DCA’s Office of Downtown Development certifies that the City of Woodstock has met all requirements for a start-up Main Street Community.
Beginning in November of 2008, the city’s Downtown Development Authority began the journey for certification. According to Billy Peppers director of Econonmic Development Services, beginning in December 2008 local city volunteers reached out to the Georgia Department of Community Affairs for assistance. The Main Street program, is a nationally recognized four point program designed to help cities in their revitalization efforts. Funded by the hotel tax and approved by the Mayor and City Council, the program received a great following in the community.
The Main Street organization has been busy garnering over 2000 facebook fans, hosting Friday Nite Live events, and now even hosting the Woodstock Green Market, Saturdays 9-12, which is sponsored by Cherokee Bank.
