Woodstock City Park, located in downtown Woodstock at the corner of East Main Street and Arnold Mill Road is home to the city’s popular Summer Concert Series, a gazebo, water fountain, Veterans Memorial and plenty of park benches and green grass. Now it’s home on the internet for your laptop, netbook, iPad, PDA, and web-connected mobile phone. This is just another step-forward for what Woodstock hopes to become as a Digital Downtown for citizens to enjoy the physical experience of Woodstock layered with additional benefits of being wired to the web.

Many of the merchants and restaurants near Main Street in Woodstock are already on social networks broadcasting specials, sharing last minute tips, and establishing customer loyalty incentives online. Having WiFi in the park is a nice start and Main Street Woodstock encourages you to get your lunch from one of the many restaurants and have a picnic in the park to enjoy your meal with web access. While all this is absolutely great and nice step froward, I hope this is just step one in an attempt to make all of Downtown Woodstock a Free WiFi zone.
Heck, I bet Woodstock could even attract more retailers if they had Free WiFi to offer their customers and employees alike. It’s not hard to blanket a small downtown like Woodstock’s Main Street area in a 4G coverage cloud. Granted there are costs, but I’m sure a private-public partnership could be put together to make it win-win for taxpayers and benefit the downtown retail experience at the same time.
Now, if we could just get some cooler weather I’d be asking everyone to join me in the park for a casual business meeting. Until then, Right Wing Tavern has Free WiFi and not only do they broadcast a strong signal, they pour some strong stout as well. Which brings to mind… will Woodstock allow open containers in the City Park? Perhaps that special events only?
