Streetscape Improvements Coming to Main Steet

Citizens and merchants have complained for years about the obstacles to enjoying downtown Woodstock.  Not enough sidewalks, not enough parking, poor lighting, no benches, and the list goes on and on.

Solutions are on the way to Improve Downtown Woodstock

Beginning sometime this summer, exact dates to be determined by funding from GA DOT, Woodstock will begin construction to improve the city streetscape.  Which means there will be sidewalks on both sides of Main St, new signage, benches, and street planters.  Sidewalks will be widened, retaining walls added, stairs at strategic locations, plus new lighting and irrigation all designed to improve the walkability and enjoyment of Downtown Woodstock.

Richard McLeod, Director of Community Development for the city, recently shared project updates with local business owners and citizens at the Woodstock Main Street Morning Buzz monthly meeting.  At the meeting, a few business owners expressed concerns on the timing of the project and its potential impact on the holiday season, McLeod had stated the project could take 10 to 12 months to complete.  However, the majority in attendance seemed willing to suffer the construction frustrations in exchange for much needed improvements to the Main street experience.

Who Pays for these Improvements?  Of course taxpayers fund government spending, but this specific project will be reimbursed 100% out of the federal stimulus package.

These improvements are in addition to the demolition of the old city hall and future expansion of the City Park, which includes an amphitheater and other features.
