As Woodstock prepares for it’s annual FreedomFest, I thought we’d step outside our local community briefly and ponder bigger things American. Recently, a Senate committee heard testimony on a bill that could bring Puerto Rico a step closer to becoming the 51st state. The Puerto Rico Democracy Act of 2010, which passed the House in late April, would grant the territory’s residents a vote on the island’s political status, with options including statehood or independence. If Puerto Rico were to become the 51st state federal law requires that a new star be added to the American flag. One can’t help but wonder: Where would we put it?
So this math nerd genius Skip Garibaldi created a formula to help determine the proper location of the 51st star. He also coded a fun little flag calculator so we can all play around with various star configurations (have fun).
You can use the widget above to design hypothetical flags of up to 100 stars. The 29-, 69- and 87-star flags are the only ones that cannot be shoehorned into one of these patterns.
Some people have commented that if we accept Puerto Rico as a state, perhaps we should Washington, DC as well. What are your thoughts on adding DC as state? And then some have said what about kicking a state out of the union – who would you kick out? would you pick on the little guy, Rhode Island? or maybe the annoying California? or why not remove ourselves and create the county of Georgia, oh yeah – there’s alreadya Georgia the country, but we could their ass right?
Enough of the silly conjecture, have fun with the flag calculator and be sure to arrive early for Woodstock FreedomFest 2010. Oh ok, I can’t give up on the silly conjecture- Who is going to win the Watermelon Seed Spitting Contest? (yes there is one during the FreedomFest July 3rd) My money is on Josh Brackett, although it would be my great-grandfather Gordon Lawson if he were still alive. I can remember him hitting the pecan tree from the lawn chair which was at least the length of a truck away.
