Managed Toll Lanes coming to Woodstock

A project to add optional toll lanes along I-575 in Cobb & Cherokee counties will require up to $350 million in public dollars, in addition to revenues from the road tolls. The proposed Managed Lanes Concept would construct one new reversible lane along each highway North of the I-75/I-575 split, and two new reversible lanes on I-75 south of there. According the AJC… “The amount of the toll would vary depending on traffic congestion in the main lanes, going up as congestion went up, aiming to always provide free flow. Construction wouldn’t begin until at least late 2011…”

What are your thoughts on paying for a faster commute to Atlanta from Woodstock?

The term ‘Managed Lanes’ refers to a system of lanes that use eligibility, access, pricing, or any combination thereof, to preserve mobility on the highways. You’ve seen this in Woodstock recently with the access traffic lights going from Highway 92 North on I-575 on ramp. Other examples include 2+ passenger HOV lanes along I-75 and of course the GA 400 toll road. In the proposed I-575 project, you would have to pay to drive on the new lane and the price you pay would be determined by the amount of traffic at the time you chose to travel. Do you like this concept?

Transportation is central to metro Atlanta’s growth and success. The Atlanta Regional Commission forecasts that 2.3 million more people will move to this region in the next 25 years. To help plan for this growth the ARC has created PLAN 2040. PLAN 2040 is the metro Atlanta area’s plan to accommodate economic and population growth sustainably over the next 30 years. In developing PLAN 2040, we have an opportunity for assessment, evaluation and possibly redirection as we develop regional policies and actions that direct resources for transportation investments and provide assistance to local governments. You can learn more about the PLAN at the ARC website and you can even join online meetings.
