Whether you are interested in scarecrows, brightly painted tomato cages, neat narrow rows of crops, mounded vegetables, organic gardening, or traditional planting the Woodstock Community Garden has a place for it all. Located just down from the intersection of Dobbs Road and Main Street is the garden gem of the city. For landlocked condo dwellers, cluster home residers, or HOA guided neighbors with a green thumb this is eutopia.

On a recent visit to the Woodstock Community Garden some of the gardeners greeted me to discuss their gardens and those of their neighbors. You can tell from the early hour as well as their energy that it is a passion for these gardeners. They are learning from each other as well as making new friendships. There is even an upcoming dinner in the garden for the gardeners and their families. Val and Shaun Harty have planted a section. Val said “We wanted something that we could do together. If we got fresh vegetables as a result, it was a bonus.” From the sound of it they will have a good crop.
For just $25, you get 20×20 plot for the season. There are 24 plots in total. Preston Pooser, Director of Parks and Recreation for the City of Woodstock when asked how the garden started replied “The people in the community wanted this.” Based on the fact that there is a waiting list of more than 20 people now for space he was right. It seems according to Pooser that the city is on the look out for more space that could be used for community gardening. When asked why he thinks it is a good measure for the city to take he said “It’s not only a place to grow vegetables, but also to build community.”

I wish we could use the lot at the corner of Lattimer and Wheeler for a community garden!!!! It would like so much better that it looks right now, with just dirt, weeds and other debris. Wonder what First Cherokee would say????
I understand there is a good chance the Community Gardens could be moved to Elm Street when the new cultural arts village is established, http://www.elmstreetarts.org/ How do you feel about that location?
Elm street would be great too
I think as long as there is enough space for those who want it
although I don’t see a huge problem with two gardens maybe? We were a little late on finding out the info, so I’m hoping we will have a chance next year
we have a flower garden here in our yard, both front and back, and would love to start veggies and fruits. But I think it would be a better way of learning and community for my two girls at a community garden
